Behind the Con With Joey Mervis

What is your name?

Joey Mervis

What is your role?

Frank Abagnale, Jr.

What grade are you in?

11th (Junior)

Why did you want to be a part of this show?

“Catch Me If You Can” has been one of my favorite shows for a long time. I saw it four years ago when it was on Broadway, and I was immediately taken by the story. I had never seen the movie, but I was so drawn to this story about a young boy who was able to fool so many people and accomplish so many things with nothing but charm and a smile. But at the same time, there’s so much going on underneath that makes him do it.

What appeals to you about the character of Frank, Jr.?

Most people look at Frank and see a thief and a playboy, but in actuality, he’s a really troubled boy who’s trying to deal with his parent’s divorce and his hormones. Frank puts on this really convincing facade for almost the entire show, so it’s really fun challenge to be playing a character who is essentially playing a character himself. Plus I get to dance around and do a lot of crazy things, so that’s always fun!

What’s the hardest part of this show for you?

This show requires a lot of stamina, especially because it’s so hard to sing. I’ve been practicing with my teacher for about 4 months now to be able to sing everything that Frank has to in this show. He almost never leaves the stage, so it’s really like a marathon, but in the end, it’s such a fun ride.

Why should people come to see the show?

“Catch Me” is a really funny, high-energy musical that has something for everyone. Whether you love the movie or you’ve never heard of Frank Abagnale before, everyone will be taken in by his story because it’s such a wild adventure that you can’t believe it’s a true story.
